The 2003 World Cup was held in Australia, after New Zealand had pulled out of an agreement to co-host the tournament. It was played in October and November and for the first time ever a team from the Northern Hemisphere, England, prevailed. The English beat Australia in a nail biting finish in Sydney with Johnny Wilkinson scoring a drop goal in the last minute of extra time.
