The inaugural Rugby World Cup was held in New Zealand and Australia in June 1987. 16 Nations took part in the tournament. New Zealand ran out easy winners of the tournament, never being pushed in any of the matches that they played. The defeated the French in the final who played in the best match of the tournament when securing a late win over Australia in the semi final.
