Rugby was introduced to Italy in the early 1900s and the Italian Federation was founded in 1911, becoming the FIR in 1928. The first International was played against Spain in 1929. Italian rugby flourished in the late 1990s when their International team put together a string of impressive perfomance, finally obtaining admission into the new 6 Nations in 2000. 2 Italian regional teams participate in the Celtic League and the European Cup.
